Assessments and ProgressWOW!! I finished up first quarter assessments and I am amazed by the progress that the students have made! Kindergarten has been closely following two specific targets to take data on this year, and for first semester we chose lower case letter recognition and counting to 100. Our pre-assessments took place at the very beginning of the school year. At that time, the percentage of students who were proficient in lower case letter recognition was 11%. As of last week, that number shot up to 38% with another 27% close to proficient meaning they are only missing 1-3 letters. That is AMAZING!!! As for counting to 100 by ones, at the beginning of the year we had16% proficient, and as of last week, we now have 44% who can count to or past 100!! WAHOO!! We have been celebrating these milestones in class, because it's such a big deal to master these kindergarten goals!! Sight Word Champs! At this time, 88% of our class have passed their first quarter sight words and several others have passed their second quarter and even some, third quarter! Their little brains are just soaking up this knowledge and having so much fun doing it! Here are our sight word champs this week: A Few Notes
Sight Word Champions for the week!Everyone has been working so hard learning their sight words!! I am very impressed! We can count to 100 by 1's!!!Great work Arianna, Peyton, Leighton, Kennedy and Jaelynn! Updates and Info
Whoops!! Looks like I forgot to post last week!! Here's an update on what we've been up to.... Sight Word Medals and Shoe Tying Masters!3rd Grade BuddiesWe have partnered up with Mrs. Hamilton's class as our buddies! We meet with our 3rd grade buddies about every other week for a craft or some games! It's so awesome to see the interaction of the young kinder with the 3rd graders. They all became fast friends and we've had a great time getting to know them and practicing writing sight words, names and the alphabet with chalk outside! Tablets and TechnologyCan I just say how incredibly blessed our class is to have these amazing tablets!!! I have been working hard to integrate them as often as possible. We have found some really amazing math apps that correspond to counting, sorting and comparing amounts! For center time, we have started using QR codes to scan and listen to stories. And of course, good old Kahoot!! The kids beg me to play almost on a daily basis. I try to fit it in once or twice a week :) Whats to come...
-I can tell why rules are made. Thank you to everyone who came to McTeacher night!Check out the students who passed their first quarter sight words this week!!! YAHOO!!!PathwaysThis week we focused on the letters Ff and Vv. We talked about how we don't change our mouth for the sounds, but how one is whispery and one is noisy. We practiced stretching words, blending words, segmenting and rhyming words. We made a list of Ff and Vv words as well! Several of the students passed their first quarter sight words *yay*!!! Look for these sight words in books and text, it will help them make the connection that the words are everywhere! We practiced how to do centers this week and worked on the letter Nn. Reading and Writing
MathThis week for math we talked a lot about the math words "more" and "fewer". We learned how to find numbers on a number line. Fewer is a hard concept for these little guys, so I encourage you to play games at home like "I have 5 crackers, if you have two fewer than me, how many would you have?" They can then take two away and see how many. This is the beginning of learning subtraction. There are also some online games that can help with this concept: http://www.softschools.com/math/games/fewer_more_equal/ http://www.education.com/games/less-than-greater-than/ http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/BalloonPopComparison.htm http://www.mathgames.com/skill/P.14-fewer-equal-and-more Reminders, notes, other stuff-We can always use treasure box items!!! -We have started using our tablets in the classroom. It would be AWESOME if you could send a pair of ear buds in a bag with your child's name on it for them to use in the classroom. Thank you! -The PTA fundraiser ends September 21st. Please send your goldenrod sheet back with updated contact information that came home last week with the fund raiser packet. -Please check your childs homework folder, the homework next week is important for our writing activities! -We have PE Monday so please make sure your child wears tennis shoes! HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!This has been such a great week! We've gotten used to our schedule and the kids know what comes next. The questions "when is lunch!?" And "is it time to go home yet??" Have almost completely subsided! Haha! Here is a little bit of what we did this week: If you have any questions or need help signing up please don't hesitate to contact me!! What we did in class:This week we hit the ground running and dove into our curriculum. We learned our first letter sound /Mm/, we learned how to stretch words, blend words with a "Mr. Alligator", and how to sing the ABC's to a new tune (Mary Had a Little Lamb). In math we practiced how to count and write numbers 0-5. We also learned how to use the math mats and watch the math videos! Our book that we read and did a craft for this week was Caps for Sale. We talked about the character, setting, problem and solution to the story. Then students colored cut and glued their own peddlers with caps on his head! Thank you to everyone that practiced tying shoes and zipping coats! These students were able to show me how they tie, and thier photo is going up on a special "Shoe Tying Masters" bulletin board in the kindergarten hallway! HomeworkNew homework came home tonight! There are 6 pages of number writing practice. Please be sure to complete this with your child by next Thursday and turn it back in! I see great potential in each and every one of your children and cannot wait to hit the ground running on Monday.
Initial Assessments- Next week we will begin assessing the students on basic kindergarten skills. This baseline data will help us group the students for small groups and also give us a great starting point for instruction. These assessments include: letter identification, sound identification, beginning sound identification, counting skills, number recognition, and counting objects (one-to-one correspondence). Compliments- Our class earned our first compliment party in only 3 days!! We have a Mr. Potatohead that we put a piece on every time we get a compliment from another adult in the building. We celebrated with a PJ day and Popsicles during second recess =) Dojo- Thank you to those of you who have signed up to track your students dojo's! They have been very effective and everyone earned enough this week to visit the treasure box once! Which brings me to my next item... Treasure Box Items- We are in need of some fun treasure box items! Anything little like dollar tree toys or dollar spot items from target work great! Remind 101- If you have not signed up for remind 101 yet, you should! It is a great tool for me to send messages straight to your phone as a text message. I promise not to overload you, but will send important reminders throughout the year! Homework- Your child brought home their first homework assignment today! It is a color sheet for practicing tying shoes and zipping coats. Please have your child practice these skills throughout the week and send back the homework folder no later than Thursday so I can put in new homework for the following week. Rest Time Towels/Blankets- I sent home towels/blankets and water bottles this afternoon. Please wash and return them on Monday! We will continue our twenty minutes of rest time throughout next week. Thank you for all of your communication throughout our first week of school, and please do not hesitate to email me or call my voicemail if you have any questions, comments or concerns! HAVE A FANTASTIC WEEKEND! We had a fantastic first day of Kindergarten! I have never had so many compliments on how great a class has been on the first day! We learned lots of procedures and rules and even mastered indoor recess. This year is going to be fantastic!
